An Unexpected Blessing

An Unexpected Blessing

My husband and I had an amazing weekend. My daughter was on a service-project weekend retreat with our church so Chuck and I had the weekend to ourselves (No, that’s not the God-sighting J ).

One of the things we did was to go to Soul Food Fridays on Friday night. Soul Food Fridays (www.soulfoodfridays.com) is the brainchild of Sharon Goodson. Last December she was burdened by the need for Christians to have a place to gather to socialize, network and enjoy entertainment in a positive and uplifting environment.

As a result, Soul Food Fridays was born. This event is held the first Friday of each month in a local reception hall. Currently there are about 200 people who attend. Although Sharon’s desire is to see the event heavily integrated, currently most attendees are African American so Chuck and I were easily identifiable as newcomers.

As we started talking to people God-sightings abounded. First, there is Sharon. When God put this burden on her heart she had to decide to be faithful to the calling. Sharon choose to do what was being asked of her. She stepped out in faith and trusted that God would bring it all together. And as a result several hundred people are blessed each month.

Then there was the entertainment, a local celebrity radio personality, a national recording star and a newly formed a capella group. This new group, Just Us, is made up of three men. I don’t yet know their back stories, but these men are currently residing in the Raleigh Rescue Mission.

They met about 8 months ago when they arrived at the Mission. As they began getting to know one another they realized that they each had a singing background. And as a testimony to the blessings they have received (remember they are living in a rescue mission … a shelter) they decided to use their voices to praise God. Just Us now has a manager, is getting media attention, has had several bookings and is hoping to cut a demo in the near future.

Chuck and I have been blessed by these men, not only by their voices and their passion for what they do, but by newly formed friendships. Not knowing anyone at Soul Food Friday Chuck and I approached a table that looked as if they had a few empty seats. They quickly invited us to join them and within minutes hugs were being shared. Yes, it was the Just Us crew.

We enjoyed getting to know them a bit and are looking for ways we may be of assistance to them as they pursue their dreams. We are hopeful that we will be able to connect them with people who are of like mind. But more than that, we are excited about these new relationships and where they will go.

None of us doubt that we were brought together for a specific purpose – to encourage one another along this journey called life and inspire each other to live with passion.

God uses the most unexpected things to reveal himself and pour out His blessings on us. We only need eyes to see Him.

Where will you see God today? He is there, all around you if only you’ll look. Are you willing to be touched?
